Seafarersday 2018

Reykjavik downtown celebrations

The annual exhibition on the Seafarers day is now on display for the year 2018.

The exhibit has received the name:

...i head my galley to port...

THE SHIPS AND THE HARBOURS AT FAXAFLOI BAY

The name of the exhibit is a quotation from a famous seafarers song.

The song made famous in Iceland years ago called the Herring song (Sildarvalsinn).

The suggested name was suggested by the Harbourmaster Gisli Gislason,

a very suitable name for the exhibit in which includes the history of ships that have frequented

the Faxafloi bay area harbours throughout the years.

Reykjavíkurhöfn, with its long history, is associated with a vast majority of these vessels,

since the port of the capital is often the first stop when arriving in Iceland.

Many of the ships have been a common sight in the capital, as shown in the photographs.

For those who are interested in development and history, this review is a great insight into the life at the harbours.

The authors of the exhibit hope you have enjoyed the information and photos presented.

The famous song is here in Icelandic.
