SHIPS OVER 12 TONS WHICH PERISHED IN ICELANDIC WATERS 1870–2020

Initially, the project began as an idea in 2013. The plan to collect information on ships lost in Icelandic waters 1870 - 2020. To honor the seafarers past and present. The idea became a reality with the support from the harbour authorities Faxaports, which led to an exhibition in Reykjavik as an event during the official Icelandic Seafarers day.

Ships over 12 tons are presented, all of which perished around Iceland. The exhibition now relaunched in conjunction with the official Seafarers Day 2020 with modification and further information on individual ships.

The authors, Gudmundur Vidarsson, Photographer and Project Manager, Agnar Jonas Jonsson, shipbuilder, and Guðjón Ingi Hauksson Historian, designed and researched the subject matter for the exhibition. The Icelandic map is made by Hans Hansen Cartographer at Fixlanda ehf, and printing by Merking ehf, in Reykjavik.

The summary of marine accidents from 1870 to 2020, was an extensive project and information on maritime accidents could be found in a variety of different sources, here they have been collected and presented in a simplified manner. The maps indicate ships that have perished or are damaged beyond repair and not seaworthy again.

The authors hope that the exhibition informs the viewer about the critical part of the history of fishing in Icelandic waters and clearly shows the dangers facing ships and seafarers in the Icelandic fishing grounds.
